Generating Knowledge Automatically from the Source Code (eKnows)
When employees leave a company, new employees have to laboriously reconstruct their knowledge from the software. This makes it difficult for a company to adapt quickly to changed parameters and leads to greater risks and higher costs. The research project NEXT aims to make the knowledge coded in the software more easily and more quickly understandable for staff without their having to laboriously read and understand lines of code. To this end, techniques and tools are being developed which make it possible to analyse a software’s source code and to translate the relevant parts of it into a form that specialists can understand. The results are text documents containing formal elements (formulae, function curves) that allow specialists and new employees to localize the knowledge they need, examine it and adapt it to new demands. The tools developed can be used both to continuously document new software and to prepare the replacement of existing software. Project partners are ENGEL Austria, Siemens Aktiengesellschaft Österreich, voestalpine Stahl GmbH and the OÖGKK, the Upper Austrian regional medical insurance company.
