Digital Revolution in Prefabricated Housing Construction
Every year, approximately 15,000 detached and semi-detached houses are built in Austria. Around 30 per cent of them are prefabricated houses. And around 80 per cent of these are built using the balloon framing technique. With their quality products, the members of the Austrian prefabricated construction association, the Österreichischer Fertighausverband (ÖFV), cover well over 50 per cent of the domestic market in this market segment. According to the ÖFV, the branch recorded increases in units produced, staff and turnover in 2017.
Although the Austrian prefabricated construction industry is currently flourishing, international competition remains intense and customers continue to demand high levels of individuality and quality. The branch must remain fit for the future. Compared to other branches, the level of automation in the construction of prefabricated houses is fairly low. The research project “Fertighausbau 4.0” aims to exploit the possibilities opened up by Industry 4.0.
The use of digital technologies should make more efficient manufacturing processes possible. On the basis of a thorough analysis of the manufacturing process, a concept for integrating innovative sensors in processes and components will be drawn up. These will then be tested under field conditions.
