Innovative Solutions for Cost-efficient Casting Processes for Light Metals
LKR has been researching the development of new aluminium and magnesium alloys along with their processing in the various casting processes for over 25 years. This research focuses primarily on the development of light metal alloys, process optimization and component design.
Horizontal continuous casting machine
Commissioned in 2017, the new horizontal continuous casting machine enables production of high-quality bar stock from special alloys for extrusion, direct forging and welding rod manufacture on a semi-industrial scale with the shortest possible delivery times and at low cost. The aim is to perform all the core processes from smelting to the finished wire as an integrated and dynamic operation.
Cold chamber die-casting machine
The cold chamber die-casting machine with horizontal injection unit will produce aluminium die-cast components with a casting weight of up to 20 kg on a semi-industrial scale. Among the research projects are the optimization of tool cooling by using additively manufactured tools and the improvement of tool service life by means of the cooling on the one hand and an optimized spraying process on the other.
Fire-resistant magnesium alloys for the aerospace industry
LKR scientists have succeeded in developing flame-retardant magnesium alloys that extinguish themselves in the event of a fire. This improved fire resistance was achieved by selectively adding calcium and rare-earth elements. One possible use of these new alloys is in the armrests and backs of aircraft seats.
