Linz Center of Mechatronics (LCM) received the 2023 EARTO Innovation Award in the “Impact Delivered” category for developing the electric Voith Schneider Propeller (“eVSP”). The awards ceremony on 11 October, 2023 in Brussels was attended by around 120 representatives of European innovation institutions and provided an international stage on which to present this outstanding and innovative project!

LCM was involved in the successful development of the electric Voith Schneider Propeller (“eVSP”). Originally patented in 1927 by the Austrian inventor Ernst Schneider, the propeller now brings the energy transition to shipping. Almost a century after its invention, the ship’s propeller has now been fitted with an electric motor for the first time by the Voith Group.

The 2023 EARTO Innovation Award marks the continuation of a fantastic success story. The innovation project recently received the 2022 ICEBERG innovation leadership award.

Digital product development is an important specialist field at Linz Center of Mechatronics. LCM uses its expertise to make a vital contribution to the energy transition and decarbonization through its work on electrification in all facets of drive engineering and mobility.

This ground-breaking project was entered for the award through UAR in order to further raise the profile of the innovative power of the UAR Innovation Network.
