On 9 September 2015, the Upper Austrian Award for Innovation was presented at the ORF Upper Austria studio in the presence of economy minister Dr. Michael Strugl.

Wood Kplus succeeded in winning the judges' award for radical innovations. Highly porous activated charcoal fibres are particularly suitable for the production of electrodes with specially high double-layer capacitance such as those used in supercapacitors. Production of these often uses fossil raw materials, and this is what Kompetenzzentrum Holz GmbH in Linz took as the starting point for their innovation which won them the judges' award for radical innovations. By means of the processes of chemical impregnation, carbonisation and physical activation, activated charcoal fibres can now be manufactured from cellulose semi-synthetic fibres. The material produced can be used as an electrode material for electric double-layer capacitors (a kind of supercapacitor) with high capacitance.

Supercapacitors play an important role in storing energy in current and future technologies (e.g. in electromobility for recovering and storing energy and to enable rapid charging). With this project, Kompetenzzentrum Holz GmbH is broadening its R&D expertise to include porous carbon fibres.
