MCL: Development of a Zero-Emission Energy Supply System

MCL received approval for the EU project FOXES (“Fully Oxide-based Zero-Emission and Portable Energy Supply”). On this project, research is being conducted into a zero-emission energy supply system for powering wireless devices.

Together with other research partners, MCL is developing a Power Cube: this is a 2x2 cm2 system which combines a high-efficiency solar cell with a multilayer capacitor and an energy management circuit. Low-cost and environmentally friendly processes and materials are being used so that the Power Cube will have no negative environmental impact from the production stage to its end-of-life. In a pilot study in Barcelona, the Power Cube will be installed in an air quality sensor as its power source to comprehensively measure the concentration of NOx pollutants and ozone.

FOXES is a project run by Materials Center Leoben Forschung GmbH (AUT), the University of Wuppertal (GER), AMO GmbH (GER), UNINOVA - Instituto de Desenvolvimento de Novas Tecnologias (PT) and the University of Barcelona (ESP). It has a budget of EUR 4 m approx. and is funded by “Horizon 2020”. Project manager is Dr Marco Deluca.
