SCCH: New Chief Scientific Officer Raises International Profile
Software Competence Center Hagenberg (SCCH) has a new Chief Scientific Officer: Dr. Robert Wille is a computer scientist from Bremen who was recruited to the JKU in 2015 as one of the university’s youngest professors. Since 2019 he has led the LIT Secure and Correct Systems Lab and is also associated with the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) as a senior researcher.
“Through its research in the fields of data and software science, SCCH is a key partner for innovation in local business and industry and a central driving force in the digital transformation in Upper Austria and beyond,” says economy and research minister Markus Achleitner, congratulating Prof. Wille on his new position. “With his scientific expertise, Prof. Wille will make a vital contribution to the continued success of SCCH and will raise the international profile of top-level research in Upper Austria still further.”
“I’m looking forward to supporting the research activities and scientific partnerships of SCCH with my expertise,” says Prof. Wille. “I intend to use my position at the JKU and my international network to increase both the collaborative work of SCCH in Upper Austria and its international standing.” For Wille, teamwork and exploiting synergies are extremely important: “Key topics such as the use of artificial intelligence and ensuring data security can no longer be covered by individual people or disciplines,” he explains. “In these areas we intend to increase our cooperation with partners from science and industry still further.”
“SCCH already has around 200 research partners from science and industry, and approximately a third of them are international organizations,” says Dr. Wilfried Enzenhofer, MBA, CEO of Upper Austrian Research GmbH (UAR), the lead research company of the province of Upper Austria. “Its close cooperation with businesses and universities is one of the centre’s strengths. This is also reflected in the ownership structure: JKU, partner companies’ association and UAR. The owners are delighted that the centre was able to recruit Prof. Wille as its new chief scientific officer. He will play a vital role in consolidating the existing solid basis together with CEO Markus Manz.”
“SCCH conducts top-level research in Hagenberg with an international orientation and profile and is involved in the LIT Open Innovation Center and LIT Pilot Factory of the JKU in Linz,” says Prof. Meinhard Lukas, chancellor of the JKU. “We see SCCH as a strong research partner. The appointment of Prof. Wille as CSO will intensify our close ties with SCCH even more.”
Between Bremen and Hagenberg
Prof. Dr. Robert Wille (37) studied computer sciences at the University of Bremen. After completing his doctorate he worked at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence and the universities of Dresden and Potsdam among others before he was recruited by the Johannes Kepler University Linz at the age of only 32 as one of the university’s youngest professors. Since 2015 he has been conducting research at the JKU and since 2019 has led the LIT Secure and Correct Systems Lab. He remains associated with the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) as a senior researcher. Dr. Wille is involved in a wide range of research topics with a particular focus on developing automatic methods for complex systems in hard- and software, and exploits synergies by means of interdisciplinary cooperation with other areas of computer science including artificial intelligence and software development, mechatronics and electrical engineering. With his ten years of experience in science and research, Prof. Wille will contribute to enhancing the scientific excellence of SCCH and intensifying the centre’s cooperation with the JKU. Wille lives in Bremen and commutes between there and Upper Austria every week.
About Software Competence Center Hagenberg GmbH
Software Competence Center Hagenberg GmbH (SCCH) is an independent research centre for software and one of the associated companies of Upper Austrian Research GmbH, the lead research company of the province of Upper Austria (member of the UAR Innovation Network). Since its foundation in 1999 the COMET K1 competence centre SCCH has focused on application-oriented research and development in the Softwarepark Hagenberg. Its close cooperation with partners from science, especially its founding partner JKU, and with many leading companies from business and industry makes SCCH a prime example of a company with a successful strategy geared towards the entire innovation chain of education, research and business. The research focus of SCCH is on software for production as well as on data, which is playing an increasingly important role owing to the advance of learning systems. Without this combination of data and software science, Industry 4.0 and artificial intelligence would be unthinkable.
