On 18 November 2015, the "Smart Mobility" call was launched. The call is part of the implementation of the strategic business and research programme "Innovatives OÖ 2020". The areas focused on are intelligent and safe transportation systems, innovative drive concepts, materials technology and smart production. The call is issued jointly by the provinces of Upper Austria and Styria and is the first initiative of this kind in Austria to involve more than one province. Four million euros are available for cooperative research Projects.

Through closer cooperation between the two provinces of Upper Austria and Styria, which already play a leading role in these fields of such relevance for the future, Austria seeks to further strengthen its position in this sector worldwide. The call is funded by the departments headed by research minister and deputy governor Thomas Stelzer, economy minister Dr. Michael Strugl, Styrian economy minister Dr. Christian Buchmann and Styrian science minister Christopher Drexler, each of which are contributing EUR 1 million. The call starts on 18 November 2015 and runs until the end of February 2016. It is carried out by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency.

The four ministers agree that, "With the first call in Austria issued jointly by two provinces, Styria and Upper Austria are significantly intensifying their cooperation in our core focus areas of mobility and the automotive sector. With the aid of close cooperation between two provinces in the fields of business and research, we aim to establish Styria and Upper Austria among the world's leading locations for the mobility industry."
