Wood: Functionalizing Wood with Electrically Conductive Films

Fitting wood and wood-based substrates with smart or intelligent surfaces is a prerequisite for using wood materials in smart homes in future. This requires the integration of electrically conductive layers, structures and sensors in the surface. To this end, the ConWood project has the aim of using magnetron sputtering to deposit a wide variety of metals, metal alloys and metal oxides on wood and wood-based materials to give the substrates the long-lasting electrical conductivity needed for each particular application.

SCCH Wins 2021 eAward

On 18 October, awards were presented to the most economic, customer-friendly and innovative IT projects at the invitation of T-Systems in Vienna. In the “Service and Processes (Public Sector)” category, Software Competence Center Hagenberg (SCCH) and the Austrian health insurance provider Österreichische Gesundheitskasse (ÖGK) won over the panel of judges. The award went to the project “Data analysis supports prevention of benefit fraud”.

COMET: Three Ground-Breaking Research Projects Launched

Competition in the 2nd call for grant applications for so-called COMET modules was fierce. 17 modules were submitted for funding from a budget sufficient to support six such proposals. Three, that is half, of the approved modules were submitted by research centres in the UAR Innovation Network – a remarkable success! Each module has a project budget of EUR 3.75 million and is scheduled to run for four years.

LIFEtool: Virtual Training for People with Dementia

Today, 21 September, is World Alzheimer’s Day which aims to raise public awareness of dementia. Current estimates put the number of people with dementia in Austria at between 115,000 and 130,000. LIFEtool gemeinnützige GmbH has been conducting research for years into ways of using modern technologies to reactivate existing cognitive abilities. In this context, a collaborative project is set to start this autumn that will include a pilot study on the use of VR headsets in dementia therapy.
