EARTO 2016 European Innovation Award for Semperit and PCCL

On 12 October 2016, Semperit and the Polymer Competence Center Leoben GmbH (PCCL) were presented with the EARTO 2016 Innovation Award in Brussels for the development of the world’s first anti-allergen surgical glove, the Sempermed® Syntegra UV. The innovative manufacturing technology, unique product characteristics and energy-efficient manufacturing process gave the two development partners the edge over a total of 35 competitors.

120 Experts From all Over the World at the PROFACTOR Symposium

At the end of September, the Arbeitswelt Museum of the world of work in Steyr presented not the history of manufacturing, but its future. Around 120 experts from twelve countries (Australia, Belgium, China , Germany, Denmark, France, Japan, The Netherlands, Austria, Hungary, USA, Switzerland) came at the invitation of PROFACTOR and the Johannes Kepler University Linz for the two-day symposium, Add+it.

Research cooperation in the field of high value manufacturing

During the trip, two cooperation agreements were signed by Upper Austrian Research GmbH (UAR): one with the Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) and the other with theManufacturing Technology Centre (MTC). By signing these agreements, both sides declare their intention to intensify the mutual exchange of information and knowledge transfer in the defined fields and to work together even more closely on EU projects in the future.

Delegation in UK “Focus on Science and Research, Birmingham, UK”

In view of the increasingly international nature of research activities carried out in Upper Austria, a delegation led by Deputy Governor Thomas Stelzer travelled to the industrial region of the West Midlands in the United Kingdom. The trip under the motto “Focus on Science and Research UK 2016” had the aim of getting to know the specialist technological fields in the region, holding discussions with representatives from research and science, strengthening existing ties between the two regions and establishing new areas of research cooperation.

RISC Software: Pioneering software for multiple genome analysis in biomedicine from Austria and Spain

From September 3 to September 7, 2016 the 15th European Conference on Computational Biology took place in The Hague, Netherlands. The members of the EU-project Mr.SymBioMath used this highranking international conference to present their results to the research community. A half-day tutorial, one of the official pre-meeting events of this conference, enabled researchers to try out the developed Tools.

LCM: VDI Status Report: Digital Opportunities and Threats — Business Models for Industry 4.0

From mechanical engineer to service provider and financing specialist? A panel of experts headed by Prof. Piller (RWTH Aachen) and including the Austrian firm Linz Center of Mechatronics GmbH developed a total of ten assumptions. The key issue was the challenges and opportunities presented by the digital revolution for current business models. A great many aspects were highlighted that business and society should watch closely.

TCKT: Conference visit BiPoCo 2016 in Szeged

The TCKT was participating in the 3rd International Conference on Bio-Based Polymers and Composites (BiPoCo2016) in Szeged, Hungary at the end of August this year. The conference, which was comprised of approx. 200 participants, takes place every two years and is organized by the Budapest University of Technology and Science. The TCKT was represented by three presentations in the scientific program, with the aim of sharing and discussing the results of our current projects.

BRP-Rotax develops highly intelligent production process for configurable premium drive system

At BRP-Rotax, a highly intelligent, flexible and minimum-cost production process for configurable premium drive systems is being developed for production in batch size 1. BRP-Rotax GmbH & Co KG has taken up this challenge in the DigiMont research project in cooperation with industry partners ABF-Industrielle Automation GmbH and Hagenberg Software GmbH along with Upper Austrian R&D partners FH OÖ Forschungs & Entwicklungs GmbH and RISC Software GmbH.

SCCH: Dipping into research

At the Software Competence Center Hagenberg, two school pupils did research as part of the scheme “Talente: Praktika für Schülerinnen und Schüler” (Talents: work placements for pupils) supported by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) and the Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT). “This work experience gives pupils an insight into our research centre and enables us to forge links with schools and their pupils,” says CEO Dr. Klaus Pirklbauer. “We are delighted that this scheme is proving so popular.”
