PROFACTOR Develops an “Endoscope” for the Aviation Industry

The fuselage of an Airbus 380 contains over 10,000 drilled holes. The quality of these holes is vital to the durability of the aircraft components which are increasingly made of lightweight fibre composite materials. In an international project named H-Scan, PROFACTOR is developing an inspection system that scans the inner surfaces of drilled holes in seconds.

PCCL: Smart Polymers from Smart Researchers

So women in engineering are rare? Not at the polymer research centre PCCL. Since it was founded in 2002, PCCL has ensured that women have been given equal opportunities in research and engineering. The success of the measures taken is shown not just by the 44% proportion of women, but especially by the successful woman researchers at PCCL: Simone Radl, for instance, who was presented with the 2016 Josef Krainer Förderungspreis (Funding Award) for her work in the fields of intelligent polymers.
