On 11 December 2018, representatives of the UAR Innovation Network visited the technology company Nordfels. The purpose of the visit was a discussion on specific topics relating to the future and research skills with a view to exploring possible areas of cooperation. The visit was prepared and organized by Upper Austrian Research. The firm of Nordfels GmbH has earned an outstanding reputation in mechanical engineering and continually invests its energies in new, innovative approaches and technologies.

PROFACTOR/RISC Software: AR for Surgeons & Engineers

Augmented reality technologies have become an integral part of industrial production. They assist human operators with assembly, for example by means of projections showing the assembly steps. The objective of the VizARd research project that has just begun is to take the development of this technology further using two very different practical examples: quality inspection in aircraft construction and planning surgical operations on the human body.

LCM and Bühler Give Pumps a Longer Life

Every second car that rolls off the production line worldwide contains lightweight die-cast components manufactured using Bühler technology. In a joint development project with LCM it has now been possible to significantly prolong the service life of pumps in the Carat die-casting machine. This was done by means of an optimized pressure flow in the hydraulic system during the processing cycles. Greater efficiency and productivity are welcome side-effects of the system update.

RISC Software: When Artificial Intelligence Reads Between the Lines

Researchers at RISC Software GmbH tried to establish whether there is a connection between tweets and share prices. To do this, they used so-called deep neural networks that recognize and learn deep-seated structural correlations. The result: while a correlation does exist it is only weak. Nevertheless, there is one thing that this project does show: deep learning methods make it possible to educe emotions from texts.

Upper Austrian Research Showcased its Work at the Business & Technology Forum

From 19 to 20 November 2018 the Business & Technology Forum 2018 was held at voestalpine Stahlwelt. An extremely varied programme consisting of several blocks of events was organized over two days for over 200 participants. In addition, an exhibition of items from research was staged to accompany the Forum. On 300 m² of exhibition space more than 20 organizations presented approximately 35 artefacts from research.

From 19 – 20 November 2018 the Business & Technology Forum Upper Austria 2018 will be held at voestalpine Stahlwelt for the first time. The two-day event combines innovation topics from research and industry and offers a varied programme: experts’ talks on future technologies and lighthouse projects from the field of research, company visits to local innovation generators and an exhibition of artefacts from research being done in Upper Austria.
