For the eighth time in succession, Upper Austrian Research was joined by five other exhibitors from the UAR Innovation Network on a fair stand at the JKU Careers Day 2019, the careers fair of the Kepler Society Linz. The most popular university subjects at the UAR joint stand: Technical physics, Chemistry, Mechatronics, Plastics engineering, Biotechnology. During these conversations, many visitors expressed a wish to work in non-university research one day.

WOOD K plus: Science Award for Water-Repellent Wood Surface

To protect wood from damage caused by excess water absorption the Smart Wood and Natural Materials (SWNM) team in Tulln developed a so-called superhydrophobic coating for wood products that causes water droplets to roll off immediately.

SCCH: Data-Driven Research for Green Energy

Flexibility is the key to decentralization on the energy markets. In future, households will produce more renewable energy by means of photovoltaic systems and consume more for e-mobility. This means that energy will be increasingly generated and consumed away from central plants. Consumers will also be producers, so-called prosumers. Optimization between suppliers, storage media and prosumers will be controlled by artificial intelligence (AI). Controlling this flexibility amid highly diverse, mutually dependent systems requires new approaches to decentralized decision-making.

RISC Software: Optimization Enables Sustainable Wood Processing

In cooperation with FILL Gesellschaft m.b.H., RISC Software GmbH developed an optimization solution for the production of glued laminated timber (glulam). The algorithm developed for this calculates the ideal cutting-to-size parameters and arrangement of the boards in glulam for the most efficient use of the wood.
